Japan is a highly technically developed country, but in some areas in IT they are well behind leading countries like the US. Some government agencies still rely on paper based filing systems. There is a distinct lack of IT talent, which creates great opportunities for qualified, skilled people to work in Japan.

Most foreigners working in IT in Japan, not surprisingly work at foreign firms. Usually most of Japanese the staff speak English, and English language skills are often required to communicate with the compan's head office.

Japanese skills are not necessarily required, but are definitely very helpful. Most hardware and software vendors do not offer English support. Most Japanese prefer Japanese language operating system and applications, so being able to read kanji can be very helpful. Although, the menus of most major operating systems are in the same location as Japanese and English systems.

There are positions available for all types of IT work, including helpdesk support, server administration, networking, application support and development.

For skilled engineers the foreign securities banks in Tokyo employ a great deal of foreign workers. Banks are fairly demanding but the financial rewards can be the highest.

If you are looking for a job, start by looking through the jobs posted here. Also you should make contact with any of the larger recruitment agencies. Also, many companies in Japan outsource their IT work to outside companies. There is a good demand for foreign workers in these outsourcing companies.
